REFLECTIONS

Experience:
My experience learning typography was often full of challenges and struggles. There were many bumps in this way, and at times I felt burned out and just annoyed with typography. The work I do and the outcomes frequently leave me unsatisfied. Yet, I'm still very happy that I had the opportunity to study typography in the first semester. Simply put, typography is all about the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable and appealing when displayed. In addition to learning knowledge of typography, I also gained a lot of basic skills in operating Adobe software, especially Illustrator and InDesign. Overall, it was a great experience.

Observations:
With all the tasks and exercises given by the facilitator, I learned to observe, which is a very important part of typography. Making some references and making careful observations will help the final result be successful. Great typography sets an effective visual hierarchy, offers a graphical balance to the outcome and determines the overall tone of your digital product which in turn creates a positive user experience. Additionally, I've noticed lately that when I watch articles, I focus more on the typography. I would catch myself looking at the layout and the typeface rather than actually reading the content.

Findings:
Throughout these 14 weeks, I found out that Typography is not as easy as it seems and it is very challenging all the way. This semester taught me that typography is not just about font size, but also includes font type, alignment, consistency, kerning, etc. They also don't merely consist of words or letters arranged in attractive typefaces or intriguing compositions. There are many restrictions, which I found to be quite a challenge when I first began studying typography. I am very grateful to Mr. Vinod for his comments and feedback which helped me see the flaws in my design.
